The wonderful, gothic town of Whitby has something for everyone, from the Whitby Abbey to the old town and its cobbled back streets complete with bazaars. No visit to Whitby is complete without challenging the 199 steps to top of the town and Abbey; its definitely worth the effort for the view alone. Whitby plays host to regular events such as the Steampunk festival, the Bram Stoker Film festival, the Whitby Regatta and the now world famous Goth Weekender. A little closer to home, Hawsker has a warm and cosy local pub that serves good food, and for outdoor enthusiasts, there’s a disused railway line only a few hundred yards away that stretches 21 miles from Whitby to Scarborough.
The North York Moors National Park lies just inland from the North Yorkshire coastal resorts of Whitby and Scarborough, with over 1,400 miles of trails, footpaths and bridleways. Carving a pathway deep through the North York Moors, is the famous North York Moors Steam Railway, which carries its passengers from Pickering in the south northward to the ‘Heartbeat’ country and Goathland.
