The spectacular scenery of the Howgill Fells lies immediately to the south and the property is on the south-western fringe of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Wainwright’s coast to coast walk passes through Kirkby Stephen, which also has a station on the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway line. National cycle routes pass through the village.
