Wanakena House | Beautifully Renovated Cottage in Historic Wanakena

2 Bedroom House in Wanakena

Welcome to “Muskoday Cottage” in the historic hamlet of Wanakena located approximately 65 miles east of Watertown off of NYS Route 3. Wanakena was founded in 1902 by the Rich Lumber Company and this is one of the original mill worker’s homes that we totally renovated for comfortable, year-round use. There are two bedrooms upstairs (one with a full size bed and one with 2 twin beds) and 1.5 bathrooms. Enjoy cooking in a new gourmet kitchen after a day of hiking, kayaking, or exploring. Sit out on the large wrap-around screened-in porch for coffee in the morning, family meals, and game nights. Read a book in a comfy chair in the three-season back porch. High-speed internet service provides the option of teleworking during your stay.
Located one block from the hamlet center, Otto’s Abode (an art space/visitor center/store), and the Oswegatchie River, it’s a short walk from the cottage to the public beach to go for a swim, launch a kayak or canoe, stroll across the iconic wooden footbridge, or to take in a summer concert or bonfire “on the village green” with neighbors. There is a public boat launch nearby as well as favorite places to grab breakfast or lunch at - “Black Waters Café” in Wanakena, “Stone Manor” in Cranberry Lake, and “Coffee Fever” in Star Lake. Star Lake is also home to the Clifton-Fine Hospital, a critical access facility, serving the medical needs of year-round and seasonal residents.
Although there are plenty of local trails, sites (such as Wanakena’s Historic Walking Tour), and waterways to explore, Wanakena is a perfect home base for seeing the greater Adirondack Park and surrounding area. The Oswegatchie River flows into the open, scenic waters of Cranberry Lake. Easy day trips include the “Wild Center” in Tupper Lake, High Peaks Wilderness Area, shops and 1980 Olympic sites in Lake Placid, the “Adirondack Experience” museum on Blue Mountain Lake, the Thousand Islands and St. Lawrence River, and Ottawa Canada – just to name a few.
