Unique and Wow factor are overused terms but this stunning apartment, one of only two, in Cornwall’s largest converted engine house really does have them in spades. Set in over an acre of landscaped private grounds with a summer house overlooking the stunning mini-lake we couldn’t imagine a more perfect retreat for two. Plus, it’s only five minutes to the world-class beach at Marazion with miles of golden sand overlooking the iconic St Michael's Mount.
The breathtaking building has been converted into only two apartments both accessed from separate sides so privacy and space to breathe are assured. Set over the two lower floors The Engine House apartment has been painstakingly refurbished and is located within a world heritage conservation area due to its historic importance. Arriving through the gates into the drive it’s hard not to be wowed by this impressive building. There is plentiful parking and a private entrance from the stunning decked terrace which overlooks rolling Cornish countryside. The beautiful mature gardens are very special with a profusion of specimen plants and numerous secret areas to escape to with only the sound of birdsong to break the silence. There is even a mini-golf putting course to while away an afternoon!
This really is a unique property and offers a wonderful opportunity to experience a sense of life from Poldark's era from the comfort of this interior-designed and rare holiday home. The Engine House apartment retains hints of its mining heritage and has very comfortable living spaces with a stylish sitting room and spiral stairs leading down to a stunning and very grown-up kitchen where you can enjoy breakfast looking out onto the gardens. The bedroom with its luxurious king-sized mattress and shades of Farrow and Ball is sure to give you a restful night’s sleep. There is a dressing room/snug next door to the bedroom with another flat-screen TV so never any arguments over what to watch!
LOCATION
The area is a world heritage site and surrounded by stunning countryside and coast. Although tucked away, The Engine House is only five minutes to Marazion and its glorious beach. Travelling East it is under ten minutes to Perranuthnoe, a pretty cove with the award-winning Victoria Inn and Praa Sands with laid back beach bar and fantastic surf. Leave the car and grab the bikes left for guests use, a great way to explore the local area.
It’s a perfect spot for touring the wider West Cornwall too and St Ives Penzance, Mousehole and Sennen are all in easy reach as well as Porthleven to the East which is a go to foodie destination.
A LITTLE HISTORY
The Tregurtha Downs engine house was originally in use as a mine from 1883 to 1902 when Cornwall was the world’s largest producer of tin as evident in the numerous old mines scattered around the county. The prohibitive costs of refurbishment and planning laws mean it is extremely rare to find a converted engine house. Having stood derelict for over eight decades luckily the Tregurtha Downs engine house was transformed into a residential dwelling in the late eighties. More recently and needing a fresh lease of life the new owner took it on when it sold for the first time since its conversion. Working tirelessly to bring this building up to the 21st century whilst retaining all the wonderful heritage it is available to holiday let for the lucky few! (If you ever want to know a little more about this iconic building Andy, the owner, is always happy to give guests a tour of the rest of the Engine House and tell you about the history of this fascinating and very special building).
LIVING
Walking into the private front door you enter the living area with its wonderful blend of old and new. The other rooms lead off it and spiral stairs take you down to the kitchen. The large L-shaped squidgy sofa is a great place to relax after a day’s adventures and there is a wall mounted flat screen TV. Off the living room is the snug/dressing room with a vintage style leather sofa which can be made up as a bed if bringing a child (do check first as to the suitability), a large flat screen TV and a chest of drawers.
COOKING & EATING
The kitchen has been beautifully refurbished and is well equipped with everything you need to cook up a feast including the obligatory wine cooler! A bespoke handmade table with seating for two is sat under the window and overlooks the garden. There is an electric hob and oven, a washing machine and a microwave oven.
SLEEPING
The gorgeous bedroom has been refurbished in an opulent style with a copper bed and luxurious pocket sprung king sized mattress. There is a side window with blackout curtains, a wall mounted flat screen TV and a freestanding wardrobe.
BATHING
The white shower room with its high ceilings and light airy feel is perfect for soaking away after a day’s activities. Towels and bedding are provided for you, please remember to bring your own beach towels.
GARDENS
You enter the apartment from a private path up a flight of stairs and onto the decked terrace. This is a large space with stylish outdoor furniture where you can lounge or eat whilst overlooking the splendid grounds. The gardens surround the engine house on all sides and are over an acre in size. There is a large lawned area right below the deck which is private to you although the owner’s dog Bru may come and say hello once in a while. The rest of the gardens are shared only with Andy the owner although with so many paths and private spots to sit you will feel like it’s all yours. The stunning summer house with requisite wine cooler and a selection of prosecco, local beers and honesty box is a truly peaceful spot to while away an afternoon. Overlooking a mini lake, it’s a real haven for wildlife. There are so many trees, plants and flowers it’s really an oasis broken only by the occasional sound of a horse going down the lane or the bird song.
USEFUL TO KNOW...
PARKING: There's plenty of private parking right outside the entrance.
WI-FI: There is free Wi-Fi.
HEATING: There are modern electric heaters throughout.
PETS: Unfortunately, The Engine House does not permit pets. Many of our cottages are pet friendly though and in perfect locations to explore the west with your companion.
LINEN & TOWELS: You'll have bedding & towels but please bring your own beach towels.
ACCESSIBILITY: You can park outside but there are external stairs and spiral stairs in the apartment so it’s probably not suitable for those with limited mobility or young children but always check with us first.

CHANGEOVER DAY & SHORT BREAKS: Short breaks are available throughout the year, for a minimum of two nights with flexible changeover days. Do check with us if your dates don't quite fit as we will always try to help.

Summary: We stayed here from June 6th to the 16th, property was as advertised, beautiful setting and Andy the owner was very personable and helpful. The Property does have a dishwasher and a washer dryer combo witch was not in the original Property description. This was a pleasant surprise as we had just been on a cruise and needed to wash our clothes. Thanks Andy, we had a great time. JTN.
