MARIPOSA:
The town of Mariposa, first settled in 1849, is the southernmost in the Gold Rush chain of towns. The streets follow the original street grid laid out by John C. Fremont in 1850. Several disastrous early fires convinced settlers to rebuild with stone, brick and adobe. Consequently, many of today’s existing structures in the historic downtown had been built by the late 1850s, with most of the remaining ones completed by 1900. Because they have always been in use, the old buildings haven’t had to be restored or recreated. You will find a book at the Homestead filled with menus of our favorite restaurants, shops, and bars in this fun town. There are also several wine tasting places in town and just outside of town. We love the Butterfly Creek Winery, which is about 15 minutes from the Homestead. It's a beautiful drive with a fun place to stop off and get fresh eggs.
Guests have access to the entire Homestead and surrounding 13 acres. There is a caretaker that lives in a nearby apartment, on the property. She is there for emergencies and to take care of the horses. We ask that you use common sense and caution around the horses. GUESTS ARE NOT PERMITTED TO ENTER THE HORSE PASTURE. You may admire and pet horses from outside of the fence. While friendly, horses are huge animals that have their own agendas and can be spooked easily and can be unpredictable. Please be extra mindful of children and keep dogs on a leash around them. That being said, they are wonderful additions to the property and our favorite sight is looking out the window at them as you're waking up in one of the upstairs bedrooms or cooking in the kitchen.
The best way to get around is by car. There are bus tours of Yosemite park and they pick up in Mariposa. Parking in the park can be tricky during high season times. Please check out the bus schedule as well.
We suggest keeping your pets within eyesight if they are outside. There is wildlife (coyotes & other critters) which might harm your pet. Also, please keep your pet on a leash around the horses and out of the pasture for their safety.
Please note we collect a damage deposit prior to your check in.
