Location
Located on the waterfront of a private island on Thompson Lake, Oxford, Maine with a causeway for easy vehicle access. The camp is located on the eastern end of the island at the northern tip of Thompson Lake. The camp is surrounded on three sides by water. The lake is a 9 mile long by 3 mile wide lake and the camps (cabin) location gives full unobstructed views down the lake.
Several steps to the dock, is the best swimming area on the lake. Shallow with no weeds or rocks. Pure sand. The camp location ensures the maximum amount of privacy and peacefulness. The only thing you will hear are loons and the bald eagles that perch over the cabin!
The Cabin
The cabin is painted in traditional Maine camp dark brown and green. It has 3 bedrooms, 2 for sleeping and one has a daybed for afternoon naps or a day guest. The front bedroom has a queen size bed. The 2nd bedroom has a full size bed and the 3rd bedroom has a single trundle bed. The inside features full knotty pine paneling throughout with hardwood floors and area rugs. Two window A/C are located in the two bedrooms. Space heaters, a wood stove and a gas heater are provided for cooler weather.
Living Area
The living room features a full size sofa and two side chairs and a glider rocker. There is a wood burning stove in the living room. Even a deer head over it! How camp is that? The dining area has a full size shaker table with 6 chairs.
Kitchen
The kitchen has a gas stove and oven with pilot light. There are plenty of cooking utensils, eating and serving dishes. The refrigerator was recently replaced. The water throughout the cabin comes from the lake so drinking and cooking water needs to be brought in.
Porch
There is a porch that runs the full length of the cabin. It has vinyl sliders for cool days and screens for warm ones. Panoramic views down the lake are waiting for you as one sits and rocks on the wicker rockers. There is a very small table for two person dining.
Swimming
The camp is located on a point that is the best swimming area of the entire lake. The water is shallow out quite a long ways from the dock. There are no weeds, muck or stones. Pure sand. Thompson Lake water is regularly testing and is rated on of the best in the state.
Boating/Watercraft
We do not recommend mooring a boat or watercraft at this camp due to the shallow water. The water is very shallow quite a far distance from the dock. The camp is on the South side of the island and gets very rough wind and waves when storms move up from the South. Two kayaks are provided however with plenty of interesting lake and bog areas around the island to explore. Gas for boats can be obtained at the nearby lake provisions store that is a quick boat or car ride away.
Directions
The camp can be somewhat confusing to find even with a GPS. The island is called Briggs Island or Wardwell Island depending up which map service you are using. From 121 (Pleasant Street) look for the “Lone Oak Farm” white sign. This is at Briggs Lane. It looks like a drive way to the brick house on the Right but it is not. Keep toward the Left and you will approach the causeway. The causeway is very narrow so drive slow and with caution. After the causeway keep toward the Left on the dirt road. Keep driving keeping toward the left at all times. You will come to a clearing with quite a few trees and you’ll need to weave through the trees. At the very end is 75 Briggs Lane.
Other Notifications:
Drinking and cooking water will need to be bought in as the camp gets its only water from the lake since its on an island. Bedsheet and towel will need to be brought in as they are not provided. There is no dishwasher, so dishes would need to be hand washed. Laundry would need to be done in town at Betty’s Laundromat in Norway. No pets are allowed. We have space heaters (3) if the mornings are cool. If you use the stove, we would prefer you to use your own wood rather than the wood that is there. The WiFi internet speed is “Up to 300Mbps”.
