Once a small fishing village, Bowness-on-Windermere grew in the 19th Century to welcome tourists and visitors mainly due its beautiful location on the shores of Lake Windermere. Here today you can enjoy a cruise around the lake, or hire a rowing boat or kayak. The town itself has many things to do, including the World of Beatrix Potter, the Old Laundry Theatre, a small cinema and many individual shops, restaurants and bars. Across the water by Ferry to the tiny hamlet of Far Sawrey is Beatrix Potters home, Hill Top and many lovely walks around the village of Hawkshead. Futher up the Lake is the wonderful Wray Castle, now owned by the National Trust and a great family day out. If you're feeling energetic you can walk here from the ferry landings (about 4 miles). All around you of course, are many walks and wanders into the fells - short or full day walks the choice is yours.
