Superior Serenity | Cozy Cabin and Private Beach | Cabin in Herbster

1 Bedroom Cabin in Herbster
Superior Serenity is the ultimate South Shore cabin: it’s cozy, the everyday world feels far away, and it gets you up close to Lake Superior. In this little space you’ve got everything you need for adventure: a comfy queen bed, a small but functional kitchen, a bath with modern fixtures, and a screen porch. You'll get spectacular views of the lake from the bench at top of the bluff, and there's also a stairway down to a secluded stretch of shoreline. It's just you and the lake down there.
Your host runs Bark Point Ventures, a vacation rental management & concierge company that specializes in properties on Lake Superior's South Shore. She lives nearby and is available 24/7 to assist her guests. Our passion is ensuring guests experience the magic of what we feel is one of the most amazing places in the world.
The South Shore is truly a place to get away from it all, but not so far from modern conveniences that getting food and gas feels like a chore. The guest guide contains tips on all the incredible outdoor activities around here, as well as local arts, plus places to get groceries, dine out, grab a drink, etc. This is truly a year-round destination, whether you enjoy outdoor adventure, local cuisine, art, or simply the company of friends & family in one of the most beautiful locations in the northern U.S.
The cabin is just a few minutes up the road from Herbster, where you'll find a charming post office (say hi to Lois for us!), rustic bar, shop with some basic groceries, and a restaurant featuring tasty Northwoods fare and drinks. It's also close to Cornucopia, which has a delightful general store/market, awesome coffee shop, bar/restaurant, and marina. Bayfield is about 35 minutes away, as is Washburn (where you’ll find the largest grocery store in the area). Ashland is about 45 minutes away, with a natural foods co-op, Wal-Mart, and a wider range of shops). Superior & Duluth are an hour and a bit away.
Superior Serenity is a tiny cabin that’s got it all, with unbelievable access to Lake Superior. Follow the driveway off the road, and you’ll feel tucked away by the time you step out of the car. You’ll catch glimpses of the lake through the trees, and on a windy day, you might even hear the sound of waves from the cabin.
Come in the front door and check out your new home base! We love the colors in the cabin: red, dark green, and lots of glowing natural wood. The space has the feel of a wilderness outpost, the sort of place you might find down a trail deep in the woods.
In one corner there’s a nook with a comfy queen bed with windows looking out to the woods on two sides. You’ll find a smart TV mounted in one of the upper corners of the bedroom nook. It’s optimized for lounging in bed and binge-watching, but it stays out of the way when you don’t want it.
When it’s time for a meal, you’ll love using the tiny kitchen! There’s a two-burner cooktop at your disposal, plus a slow cooker and some other helpful gadgets, and a mini-fridge. And if you’re in the mood to whip up a feast, there’s full supply of cookware waiting for your inspiration, plus (of course!) a coffeemaker. Don’t forget to check out the hand-painted details on the kitchen countertop! The table seats three, and there’s a set of wine glasses all ready for you.
Next to the table there’s a sliding glass door that leads out to the screen porch, where you’ll find two chairs and a great view of the lake through the trees. This is a great spot for sitting and listening to the wind in the trees and the waves on the lake. It’s fully enclosed, so you won’t have to worry about bugs finding you. If you fancy some outdoor cooking, there is a gas grill, and fear not if you need a little rinse after hanging out on the beach: there's an outdoor shower behind the cabin.
The adventure begins when you head down the trail and over the cute little footbridge toward the lake. You’ll find a bench and a fire ring with perfect views from the top of the bluff. To the west you’ll see the hills on the other side of Herbster, and, on a clear day, you can look all the way across to the North Shore in Minnesota.
If you continue along the trail, you’ll walk parallel to the shore for a bit then come to the top of a stairway that takes you down to the water. You’ll descend into a small ravine, where a stream flows toward the lake and and under the stairway in wet weather. As you follow the stream out to the shore, the trees part and you’ll be face to face with Lake Superior. From the beach you can look up at trees clinging to the edge of the bluff, doing their best to hold on against the power of the lake. You’ll hear the waves wash through the cobble on the beach, and listen for the sound of crashing surf echoing off the bluff behind you. The lake has many moods, and you’ll have one of the most intimate spots on the South Shore to appreciate them all: besides one stairway to the east, and the town park in Herbster in the distance, you won’t see much of any sign of a human presence when you’re down by the water. Enjoy the beauty & peace and quiet!
Due to the lack of public transportation and the distance between towns/amenities, a car is pretty much essential. But, on the plus side, traffic is not a concept we have up here!
